Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
